Danielle: An Inventory of Being
I am Danielle.
I am twenty three years old.
I am a teacher, but also a student
I am 67 inches tall, standing very tall above my students
But I am always at their level whenever they need me.
I have green eyes but sometimes blue
And long brown hair with streaks
Of blonde through it. Its curly, but I always wear it straight.
I am a role model, a sister, a daughter and a friend
And as a teacher I will wear many hats as well.
I work hard in all that I do, but I love lazy days of nothing
I love Sundays and Fridays,
but I hate Mondays.
The other days are neutral for me.
I don’t like sarcasm, but I love practical jokes
I hate when plans don’t work out, but I like to go with the flow.
I am hardworking, intelligent
And don’t like conflict
But I can solve the case of the missing backpack anyday.
I miss the carefree days of running through the sprinkler,
Walking the lane to meet the school bus
The innocence of childhood –
Oh how I couldn’t wait to be a grown up.
I have the passion to teach the future generation
I believe in the journey
Not the destination that kids have.
Learning is like a postcard.
I tend to think with my heart, even though I know I shouldn’t
Sometimes the week will seem long and all I will need is
And a Corona and lime or hot bubble bath
Or long walk and ice cream on the way home
Or just relaxing, curled up on the couch
And by the time Monday morning comes
I will remember why I love my profession.
I believe in God
I will get married in a church.
My kids will go to Sunday school
Because I got to when I was young.
I am the oldest of four
It has made me the most responsible
I think?
I believe in fate. The old cliché
“Everything is going to be alright, if you play your cards right”
I think best when I’m all alone, but hate being by myself
Music soothes my soul, while crowds simply make me grumpy.
I cry in movies, even happy ones.
I am afraid of change.
Skinner and Dreiker are my idols
But Canter and I are one.
I love Christmas and the magic it brings to many homes.
Family is the most important thing to me.
I believe in happily ever afters
And not just in fairy tales.
I believe in love.
His smile can make a bad day go away instantly.
I hope I have found the kind of love my Mom and Dad share.
I am confident and compassionate, I get that from my Mom.
I am sensitive and competitive, I get that from my Dad.
I am stubborn, I can crochet and am boss of the outhouse, my Grandma taught me these fine traits.
I am a constructivist
I know that play is just as important as work
And that extra erasers and band aids in my front desk drawer
Can solve the majority of conflicts in my world.
I like chocolate milk and Mesquite BBQ chips.
But only on road trips.
My roots belong to prairie sunsets
And the harvest fields of gold.
And family suppers on the tailgate
With a thermos of coffee just for Grandpa.
I love the smell of fresh baked bread and cinnamon.
I don’t drink coffee, but like fancy drinks from Starbucks.
I like lemons in water and matching accessories
Except my socks.
I know that 3:30 can seem like an eternity away,
But recess can fly by in the blink of an eye.
I love hugs but hate when people are sad.
I'm afraid of chickens.
I like M&Ms with popcorn, and at the movies.
I like flipflops and sunglasses, but
I hate windy days and slugs.
I like big rooms with wide open spaces and family photos on display
They make me feel close to home.
I like mountains and waterfalls and days on the boat.
I don’t like rainy days, but I love the smell after the showers have stopped.
I want to be someone’s whole world
I believe everything happens for a reason
And that there is a purpose to every means
Teaching is my destiny.
I hate good byes, so see ya later.
I am Danielle Serruys
And this is 2011.
